Women's soccer standout Dunn has sizable fowl-lowing back home

Image
TOKYO – Some athletes get photos and videos from back home of their spouses or children. USWNT defender Crystal Dunn gets them off her chickens. When much of the United States shut down last year because of COVID-19, Dunn and husband Pierre Soubrier got five chickens: Rocky, Toulouse, Quinn, Juke, and Chelsea. They live in a coop in Dunn and Soubrier’s backyard, and make occasional appearances on Dunn’s social media feed. Asked how the chickens are faring in the extreme heat the Pacific Northwest is experiencing, Dunn said they’re “doing fine.” “I get my proof-of-life videos every morning,” Dunn said. Dunn and Soubrier also have three cats. “I feel bad for my husband. He has to take care of eight living things,” Dunn said.

A rising junior with the Kentucky Wildcats, she is ranked No. 2 in the world in the event but was unable to overcome a series of uncharacteristically poor shots early in the finals. Olympic Games Tokyo 2020: India's top medal contenders

Image
India is sending its largest ever contingent to the Tokyo Olympics in the hope of bettering its medals haul over previous Games. With 120 athletes competing across 85 events, the country hopes to win medals for shooting, wrestling, boxing, archery and badminton. India returned with a meagre two medals from the 2016 Rio Olympics - a silver for ace shuttler PV Sindhu in the Women's Singles Badminton event and a bronze for wrestler Sakshi Malik in the Women's 58kg Freestyle Wrestling event. This time, India is participating in two events for the first time, with Bhavani Devi becoming the first fencer to qualify and Fouaad Mirza making it to the equestrian event.  Shooting India's 15-member shooting contingent is the favourite to bring back a big haul of medals. The country's biggest hopes are pinned on Manu Bhaker and Saurabh Chaudhary. Nineteen-year-old Bhaker, one of the top contenders in the 10m Women's Air Pistol event, has in the past won it all from World Cup gol...

U.S. women’s soccer stunned in 3-0 loss to Sweden

Image
TOKYO — Two goals from Stina Blackstenius, one in each half, lifted Sweden to a 3-0 win over the reigning world champion United States on the first day of group play in women’s soccer at the Tokyo Olympics. The loss snapped a 44-game unbeaten streak for the U.S. and ended a more modest one for new coach Vlatko Andonovski, who went 22-0-1 in his first 23 games, the lone draw coming against Sweden. U.S. goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher made four sprawling saves in the opening 24 minutes before a well-marked Blackstenius finally beat her, stepping in front of defender Abby Dahlkemper to nod home a perfect right-footed Sofia Jakobsson cross from the edge of the penalty area. It was the first goal the U.S. had allowed in seven games and 592 minutes — or since the last time it played Sweden — and was just the second score the Americans have conceded in 16 months. But it wouldn’t be the last with Blackstenius doubling the lead in the 54th minute, pouncing on a corner kick that had struck the far post...

Japan goes nuclear in bid to stay cool during Summer Olympics

Image
TOKYO, July 20 (Reuters) - Japan has rebooted extra power plants, including a long-dormant nuclear reactor, and taken other steps to avoid a power crisis as temperatures soar and demand for cooling surges, especially in Tokyo, where the Olympics begin on Friday. With the world's eyes on Tokyo as it hosts the Summer Games amid worries over risks posed by the coronavirus pandemic, Japan wants to avoid ay recurrence of the electricity crisis suffered during the winter, when power companies urged customers to ration usage to prevent blackouts. Earlier this month, Kansai Electric Power (9503.T) restarted another reactor, the fifth to be restarted in Japan since January, including a 44-year-old unit that had been shut for ten years. Japan has nine reactors operating, the highest number since the Fukushima atomic disaster led to the shutdown of Japan's nuclear industry. A gas-fired plant and a coal plant have also been brought online ahead of schedule. The increased generating capac...

Artificial crowd noise to be played at Tokyo Olympics

Image
With no supporters allowed inside stadiums throughout the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games, artificial crowd noise will be played in the arenas to supplement the lack of fans. This was announced by the president of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, in addition to other measures already in place such as connecting with families through a screen so that athletes can instantly celebrate their successes with their loved ones. Bach believes that the measures taken against COVID-19 will prevent the spread of the virus, despite a recent case within the Olympic village coming to light. "The case detected is already isolated," he commented. "The only thing we can do with people who are against it is to start a dialogue with them and show them that, even in these times, sporting events can be organised safely. "This event will be the most restricted sporting event in history."

Matteo Berrettini withdraws from the 2021 Tokyo Olympics

Image
World No.8 Matteo Berrettini has become the latest high-profile tennis player withdraw from the Tokyo Olympics. He has enjoyed a brilliant 2021 so far, the highlight of which has been reaching the Wimbledon final, but he will not compete in Tokyo this summer. The reason for the Italian star's absence in the Olympics this summer is due to muscular problems. Berrettini would certainly have been one of the favourites for the gold medal, given the year that he has enjoyed and because he thrives on hard courts, which will be the surface in Tokyo. Instead, he joins Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Dominic Thiem and Roberto Bautista as the other high-profile names to have withdrawn from this summer's Olympics.
